Keeping the Air in Your Tuscaloosa Home Clean this Winter

1/20/2016 (Permalink)

Now that the weather is getting colder and we’re nestled away inside our homes, it’s a good time to check your home for certain things that may need to be replaced or cleaned. Take your air ducts for example. Many times, these go unnoticed, but can’t be forgotten. According to Houselogic, the air in your home circulates through the air ducts about five to seven times a day, carrying all of the dust and particles through the air. This is where your HVAC filter comes into play, but this filter can only handle so much.

Reasons for cleaning your air ducts

  • Keeping the air clean – This can be important especially for people with allergies. Getting rid of the dust will ensure that it does not get fed back into your home.
  • Ease of airflow – Making sure that your air ducts are clean makes it easier for air to flow smoothly and circulate throughout the house. This also reduces the amount of energy that needs to be used in order to circulate the air.

Methods of cleaning air ducts

  • Hand-held vacuum – This can be done by attaching the brush to the end of the vacuum hose. This may be the easiest for some people, but unfortunately not the most efficient. This usually leaves dust behind in places that are harder to reach.
  • Mechanical brush – A rotary brush is attached to a mounted vacuum that is fed through the ductwork to suck away debris. This method can be harsher for older systems.
  • Air Sweep – This is known as the most effective way to get the job done. A mounted vacuum with a compressed air hose is fed into the ducts to get rid of any lodged or stuck debris.
