IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration - 2015 defines 3 Categories.
Cat. 1- water originates from a sanitary source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion or inhalation exposure.
Cat.2- significant contamination and has potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed. i.e Water coming from dishwasher or washing machine overflow
Cat. 3- DON'T TOUCH IT! Commonly referred to a "black water" this water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogens or toxic agents. i.e. sewage backup or flooding from rivers
